Locomotive Exhibits

Through the years, a series of mergers helped the Union Pacific create the strongest railroad in the world. The addition of Missouri Pacific more than doubled UP’s route miles, Western Pacific track led UP to the Ports of San Francisco and Oakland, Katy gave UP access to Texas through Oklahoma, Chicago & North Western brought UP to the Twin Cities, and Southern Pacific and Denver & Rio Grande Western provided the legendary Sunset Route and a direct route through Colorado.
The UP has created six specially painted locomotives to commemorate the railroads that have become part of the UP system. These represent the:

  • Chicago & North Western Railroad - UP 1995
  • Missouri Kansas Texas Railroad - UP 1988
  • Missouri Pacific Railroad - UP 1982
  • Denver & Rio Grande Western Railroad - UP 1989
  • Southern Pacific Railroad - UP 1996
  • Western Pacific Railroad - UP 1983

Live Steam Display

“Live Steam” is the hallmark of railroad history and heritage. It symbolizes the strength and the importance of days gone by. Steam was the power that transformed our nation.

Enthusiasts, young and old, still marvel at the intricacies of the most incredible technology of its time. The Union Pacific Railroad has operated some of the most modern and powerful steam locomotives ever built.

The capabilities of these incredible steam locomotives made them the mainstay of UP freight operations through the 1950’s.

Nothing symbolizes ‘Railroading’ more than the sound of steam powered locomotives.

Cody & Memorial Park

** Cody Park displays one of the largest steam locomotives ever built, the Union Pacific's Challenger 3977.  Today only 2 of the Challenger's remain, the one on display in North Platte and one, which was renovated by UP volunteers and functions as an excursion train, which is housed in Cheyenne, Wyoming.

** Memorial Park displays the Baldwin Locomotive #480.  Built in 1902 it weighs in at 187,900 lbs.
