The city of North Platte traces its beginnings to railroading, which in 1863 stretched its iron rails across the prairies to complete the nation's first transcontinental railroad. The city of North Platte was then founded in 1873, situated at the confluence of the North and South Platte rivers along the Great Platte River Road.
North Platte is home to the largest railroad classification yard in the world. Still expanding, the Union Pacific’s Bailey Yard employs over 2,500 men and women, covers 2,850 acres and switches 10,000 rail cars daily. The main rail line through North Platte is the busiest rail freight corridor in the nation, with more than 135 trains operating over the line every 24 hours.
North Platte's roots might be firmly planted in its history, but its eyes are clearly focused on the future. We invite you to participate in North Platte’s vision.
