Rail Fest Wellness Program
‘The first step in Creating a Healthy Lifestyle Components of WellnessWell.ness (wel-nis), noun an active process of becoming more aware of, and making choices toward, a more successful existence through a multi-dimensional approach to personal health.
As a central piece of this year’s celebration, Rail Fest will be focusing on Environmental and Personal Wellness Education Programs to address common issues affecting our lives and the lives of our children. Wellness is a personal journey with each component of our actions being like a pebble dropped into water: a ripple effect beyond the individual and onto friends, family and the community.
Since its inception, the Original Town Association, Inc. of North Platte, Nebraska has primarily focused its energies on the enhancement and revitalization of the housing and infrastructure in low to moderate income neighborhoods within our community.
As an adjunct to improving the physical nature of our neighborhoods, it seems appropriate that we also use ‘Rail Fest’ as a platform to convey a synergistic wellness message to encourage the personal enhancement of the health and wellness of the people who live in those neighborhoods as well. Historically, people have tended to interpret good health and ‘wellness’ as the absence of illness or disease. More recently however, wellness has come to have a new meaning – feeling as good as one can feel regardless of diagnosis. It is becoming generally accepted that ‘being well’ results from engaging in activities that support and maintain one’s own health and wellness.
However, there is often a gap between knowing what to do, and how to apply it to our daily lives. To help alleviate that gap, an emphasis on Personal and Environmental Wellness Education Programs will be a central part of ‘Rail Fest’.
The challenge for each of us is establishing a routine that allows us to blend our wellness choices in a healthy manner. The first step in that process is discovering what those choices are, and that's the purpose of the Rail Fest Wellness Education Program.
The Rail Fest Wellness Education Program is structured around three of the more common components for total wellness – physical, social and environmental. An icon will be developed for each component. This icon will then be used to help those who attend Rail Fest quickly find the location of each component at the celebration.
PHYSICAL WELLNESS:The physical component encourages regular activity including cardiovascular fitness, flexibility, and strength. Physical wellness includes knowledge about food and proper nutrition; while discouraging the use of tobacco, drugs and excessive alcohol consumption. It includes medical self-care and appropriate use of the medical system. Spending quality time each week building endurance, flexibility, and physical strength; taking responsibility and care for illnesses, and knowing when professional medical attention is needed; understand and appreciate the relationship between sound nutrition and how your body performs. SOCIAL WELLNESS:The social component encourages contributing to one’s human and physical environment and to the common welfare of one’s community. It emphasizes the interdependence with others and nature. It includes the pursuit of harmony in one’s family. Becoming more aware of your importance in society, and the impact you have on nature and your community; taking an active part in improving our world by encouraging a healthy living environment, and initiating better communication with those around you; actively seek ways to preserve the beauty and balance of nature along the pathway.
ENVIRONMENTAL WELLNESS:The environmental component focuses not just on your relationship with the planet and nature but your relationship with your personal surroundings as well. Environmental wellness refers to how your outer environment affects your opportunities and motivations to lead a healthy life. It involves taking care of your possessions, homes, and places of business. When your personal surroundings are well cared for, clean and organized, you experience a greater sense of comfort and less anxiety. Environmental well-being includes trying to live in harmony with the earth by understanding the impact of your interaction with nature and your personal environment, and taking action to protect the world around you.
